As part of the redesign and rebrand of Birmingham Magazine, developed new templates, masthead, departments and overall content strategy, as well as a comprehensive style guide. The team at BIG Communications also designed the features for the new mag. A really fun project, that I am proud of when I see it on the newsstand. Additional credits: Matt Lane Harris AD - Old Made New feature, Shannon Harris AD, Illustrator - Welcome Additions feature, Ford Wiles ECD - Cover art and Tony Petelos feature, and last, but not least Ryan Brown AD - Masthead and Template master build.

Ruffner Mountain Nature Preserve is a 1,011 acre natural oasis 10 minutes from downtown Birmingham. The preserve is focused on ecological conservation and education. The brand and marketing materials had been ignore for some time and because of lack of funding. Ruffner had received some private support that allowed for expansion and renovation of their learning center and the time was right to undergo a brand revamp as well, BIG volunteered to help pro-bono. After meeting with Ruffner‘s new leadership, I started by researching the history of Ruffner Mountain and reviewing all previous marketing materials. Ruffner had come into being as part of a WPA (Works Progress Administration) project around 1940. Which led to a modernized WPA style for the new brand identity. The WPA style logo system is made to expand over time. The nature center and fire tower logos are examples of site specific marks while the primary nature preserve mark appears as an umbrella for the brand.

Brand identity for the Birmingham - Jefferson County Transit Authority. The BJCTA has had its issues over the years, the worst being broken buses and underfunding to fix or replace. When Federal funding came through to help purchase a new fleet of CNG buses, it was a great opportunity to re-brand and make a fresh start. I wanted to give it a clean, modern look that would also be somewhat timeless. <img src="http://payload3.cargocollective.com/1/3/96824/2364937/BJCTAMAX-Side.jpg" border="0" width="640" height="600" width_o="640" height_o="600" src_o="http://payload3.cargocollective.com/1/3/96824/2364937/BJCTAMAX-Side_o.jpg" align="left" /> <img src="http://payload3.cargocollective.com/1/3/96824/2364937/BJCTAMAX-Sides.jpg" border="0" width="640" height="487" width_o="640" height_o="487" src_o="http://payload3.cargocollective.com/1/3/96824/2364937/BJCTAMAX-Sides_o.jpg" align="left" /> <img src="http://payload3.cargocollective.com/1/3/96824/2364937/BJCTAMAX-FrontBack.jpg" border="0" width="640" height="368" width_o="640" height_o="368" src_o="http://payload3.cargocollective.com/1/3/96824/2364937/BJCTAMAX-FrontBack_o.jpg" align="left" /> <img src="http://payload3.cargocollective.com/1/3/96824/2364937/BJCTAMAX-Downtown.jpg" border="0" width="640" height="356" width_o="640" height_o="356" src_o="http://payload3.cargocollective.com/1/3/96824/2364937/BJCTAMAX-Downtown_o.jpg" align="left" />

Great bands break rules, but legends write their own. JANE’S ADDICTION have actually written the rule book for alternative music and culture through a combination of genre-defying classic songs and a cinematic live experience. Their songs serve as the Ten Commandments for alt rock, inspiring an entire generation of bands such as Nirvana, Rage Against the Machine, Nine Inch Nails, Smashing Pumpkins, Pearl Jam and Tool. When the Los Angeles quartet came along, they merged alternative and rock like no one before, becoming the first alternative rock band, creating a new sound and attitude. These posters were done for the Great Escape Artist Tour.

New brand campaign for Colonial Brookwood Village (Birmingham). Hand-crafted, stop-frame animation lends a unique/eclectic feel to the campaign as well as a textural softness. It has a calmness wrapped in fantasy and pleasantry, unlike any mall I know. When Shannon brought up the idea, it just felt perfect to me, so right for Brookwood (in fact we even called the star “Brook Wood”. It was quite an undertaking building all the cut-paper elements and took many long nights. I’m very happy with the way these turned out. But, I do need a break from scissors, exacto knives and paper for a while. Additional credits: Shannon Harris - AD (for the great outfit designs, the cool idea and for bringing Brook to life), Brian Curtain - Video Editor/Music, Anna Yeager - Intern Extraordinaire.

A tongue-in-cheek tribute to the greatness of Ice Cube. "Check Yo Self" was the second hit single from Ice Cube's third solo album The Predator. It was released in July 1993 and features New York rappers Das EFX. It topped both the Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop and Rap charts while also reaching number 20 on the Hot 100 chart.[1] The song retains two main versions, the original and a remix which utilizes the same beat as Grandmaster Flash's "The Message," titled "Check Yo Self (The Message Remix)". The supporting vocals in this song are featured by the Wu-Tang Clan.
